In early church tradition, priests would often use stoles to represent their position within church heirarchy. Originating from the Latin word “stolae,” meaning a long robe without sleeves, these articles of clothing were often worn during the time of ancient Rome. Within academia, the tradition of the stole has come to signify an accomplishment during the academic career of a student. These achievements may commemorate an accomplishment in regard to an educational major, academic accomplishment, or a membership with an academic club. Simply, graduation stoles differentiate graduates from one another.
